Played from acoustic Brunswick 2569 (recorded in Chicago January 17, 1924), Al Jolson is partnered by the Isham Jones Orchestra, and with Bud De Sylva, ukulele, in the famous tune "California, Here I Come". Again, my Columbia BII Disc Graphophone does the honors. Apologies for the truncated introduction, but that was the only way I could fit this within the 3-minute max on my camera...
Recorded December 7, 1933 in London, here is the great Al Bowlly crooning "My Song Goes Round the World", accompanied by Ray Noble and His Orchestra, on Victor 24555. I am playing it on my HMV 101 portable gramophone, outfitted in blue rexine, and dating from about 1929. It sports an HMV No. 4 sound box.
Tenor Tito Schipa in Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci", Harlequin's Serenade "O Colombina". From Victor 66045 (recorded 03 February, 1922; orchestra conducted by Victor stalwart Joseph Pasternack). Here played on my 1909 Columbia BII Disc Graphophone. The horn is an original scalloped oak Columbia horn, unmarked but I believe originally made by MusicMaster.
Here is "Mama Loves Papa", recorded in New York, October 12, 1923 by the great Isham Jones Orchestra, issued on Brunswick 2506. Playback is on my ca. 1907 Victor VI with HMV No.4 soundbox.
Here is my Victor Victrola 120, dating from 1921 (a slight updating of the venerable VV-XVI), in brown mahogany (yes, the finish is original). On the turntable is banjoist Fred van Eps playing the "Infanta March", on Victor 16847 -- the record issued in early 1911. You can barely make out the piano accompaniment, but van Eps comes through with amazing clarity. The soundbox is an HMV No. 4.
Played from Victor 22729 is "Green Eyes", sung by the ubiquitous Chick Bullock, with Don Azpiazu and His Havana Casino Orchestra (recorded in New York, June 4, 1931). I am using my red HMV 102 portable phonograph (dating from ca. 1950).
Played from Victor 22441 on my blue HMV 102 portable phonograph (from the mid-'30s), here is vocalist Johnny Marvin with Don Azpiazu and his Havana Casino Orchestra (recorded in New York, May 15, 1930).
Likely a by-product of the "Sheik" craze of the early '20s, this song is here performed (as played back on my Columbia BII Disc Graphophone) by Don Bestor and The Benson Orchestra (Victor 19103; recorded on 6/13/23).
Here is "Lonely Melody" (Paul Whiteman & His Orchestra, with Bix Beiderbecke, cornet; Victor 21214; recorded 1/4/28), as played back on my Victor VE8-30X with tooled leather panels (phonograph dating to 1927). It has a brass Orthophonic soundbox.
