Held nightly from May 11 to Oct. 15, you can ride on a yakata-bune boat on Nagaragawa River in the evening to watch cormorant fishing masters using cormorants to fish ayu sweetfish. Before the boats depart, there's also a demo by an ukai fishing master. Photos: http://photoguide.jp /pix/thumbnails.php? album=706

Using birds to fish with rather than fishing reels - the birds swallow the fish, and the fishermen cause the birds to regurgitate the fish. It's pretty amazing.
Cormorants swim at surface until their feathers soak in water--except for trapped air close to their bodies. They submerge and chase fish, but because of the trapped air, they have to work to stay under. They can, however, fly with saturated feathers, as this video shows. Watch the two-footed stamp and push on the water as the Cormorant works to gain airspeed. Filmed at Brazos Bend State Park.
Thanks to

Hi - Can somebody tell me if this is a Cormorant or Shag - Thanks. Incidentally I have left this video in the smaller screen size as videos do not look so good in the new larger stretched YouTube screen size launched Nov 08 - Ian Jones Web-Store Ltd http://www.webstore. co.uk

On June 16, 2007 the Canadian Forces had a "Family Day" on the shores of Quidi Vidi Lake in St. John's NL. Part of the festivities included a demonstration by the CF SAR team. I was playing in a softball tournament in the area, and was lucky enough to catch this from the area of the ball field.
